The LT Museum Friends took a trip to Vivarail - the company who are taking old 'D Stock' District line trains, and converting them to Class 230's (also known as "The D-Train") to run on the Battery powered Vivarail Class 230 number 230002 was being demonstrated at Rail Live 2018 (20th & 21st June 2018). This has been converted from ex-London Underground D stock that once used to Class 230 DEMU D-train no. 230003 on test at Bow Brickhill on the Bletchley to Bedford Marston Vale line, wearing the new London North Western Railway (LNWR) livery. The Class 230 vehicle was  The British Rail Class 230 D-Train is a diesel electric multiple unit or battery EMU built by rolling stock manufacturer Vivarail for the British rail network. The units are converted from London Underground D78 Stock, originally manufactured during 1980 by Metro Cammell. The conversion re-uses the D78's aluminium bodyshells with new interiors. It runs on the same bogies but these are rebuilt to as-new standard by Wabtec and fitted with brand new 3-phase AC induction motors sourced from Austria. Class 230 D-Train is being developed by Vivarail through the conversion of retired London Underground D78 Stock. The new trains will be offered in three configurations named City, Commuter and Country. First test run of the D-Train unit was conducted in April 2016. Vivarail's new Class 230 DMU/Battery EMU is something of an answer to alleviating stock shortages and replacing aging DMUs, including Pacers, especially on rural services. The Class 230 itself is a converted London Underground D78 stock train, previously used on the District Line until the introduction of modern S-Stock trains. The Class 230 can be configured to suit different types of passenger with specific needs for each type of journey: The City layout is ideally suited to busy lines with frequent stops, where having 4 doors per side with wide aisles and vestibules will allow swift movement of passengers on and off the train.
