Oil prices have been high and low and everywhere in between over the years. Political and other changes have consistently rocked the oil landscape since 1948. Prices ranged between $2.50 and $3.00 a barrel until 1970. The chart shows historical prices for two grades of crude oil: West Texas Intermediate (WTI - bright orange curve) and Brent crude from the North Sea (light orange curve). The chart also displays the spread between the two (Brent-WTI Spread - light cyan area). WTI is traded on New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). Prices are based on historical free market (stripper) oil prices of Illinois Crude as presented by Plains All American. Typically Illinois Crude is a couple of dollars cheaper per barrel than West Texas Intermediate (WTI) because it requires a bit more refining.
